Accessibility

North Devon Council is committed to making its website as accessible as possible to everyone, including those with disabilities and those who use assistive technologies to browse the web.

We have chosen to use WordPress for this blog because WordPress technology produces websites to a high standard of accessibility:

  • uses standards-compliant valid hypertext markup language (HTML) enabling cross-browser and cross-platform compatibility
  • uses cascading style sheets (CSS) for layout and styles, allowing users to change the text size to suit their needs
  • images include ‘alt’ text which provides a textual equivalent to describe the image to those who are unable to access it
  • does not use tables for layout which should be beneficial to those who use screen readers

We use Adobe(R) Acrobat(R) software to create PDF (portable document format) files. Incorrectly formatted PDF documents may not be readily accessible to screen readers and may not be formatted for visually impaired users.

For that reason, we tag PDF documents to meet accessibility requirements.
